Professional development

Schwabe supports attorneys’ professional development goals through firm-paid attendance at Continuing Legal Education (CLE) sessions and conferences, in-house CLE training sessions, advanced legal writing workshops, and practice-specific training.

Our mentor program is designed to provide a Development Advisor (DA) for each new associate and lateral associate joining the firm. The DA program is designed to enhance the career development of our associates, assist the lawyer in learning his/her trade, achieve success at the firm and execute work effectively. Simply stated, the DA is asked to take “ownership” of the lawyer’s success and evaluate the lawyer’s progress on behalf of the firm. DA assignments last for the first three years or longer. 

The Associate Integration Committee was established to serve as a buddy, mentor, or confidant to our new lawyers. This relationship is designed to run in tandem with and follow the relationships between the new associates and the many other budding interactions, including Department Heads, Development Advisors, PBAs, Supervising Lawyers, and others to help facilitate integration into the firm.

Schwabe has established an Associate Cabinet to leverage associate insight and to expose the firm’s leadership to diverse perspectives. The AC will determine how to address the identified challenge, including seeking data and input from other lawyers and the AC Shareholder Liaison. The AC will develop leadership skills, foster camaraderie among associates and other lawyers and staff, and provide recommendations addressing challenges directly to the CEO, Board of Directors, Department Heads, Industry Group Leaders, General Counsel, Chiefs, or others as may be appropriate
